Around the Fall of 2015, work began on the new Meriden Train Station in the downtown area. Though AEG is not working on this project currently, it is the stimulus for much of the redevelopment work currently going on in Meriden, including the work of AEG. The City of Meriden expects the new train station to be completed and fully operational by the year 2020.
Currently, Amtrak operates six trains that stop daily in Meriden. However, once the New Haven-Hartford-Springfield (NHHS) Rail Program is completed, trains will be coming through the station every 30 minutes during peak rush hours and every 60 minutes during off-peak times. Given Meriden’s location halfway between New Haven and Hartford, it is estimated that by 2030 the rail service will serve over 400 daily commuters in Meriden. As a result, projects such as 24 Colony Street have begun construction to accommodate the new influx of people in the town. City officials are hopeful that the train station, new properties, and redeveloped properties will continue to attract more people, and business, to Meriden and reinvigorate its economy.
